17 Totally Free Date Ideas

For those times when you want to go on a date, but you don't want to spend any money. Here are 16 totally free dates ideas that are actually cool.

And if you're single, many of these would be fun to do with a group.

17 Free Date Ideas

  1. Plan a Pinterest date where you look up your favorite design styles and share ideas of what your dream home would be like.

  2. Bust out some conversation starters and get to know each other better.

  3. Hit the trails. Go for a run, a hike, or a walk.

  4. Go on a bike ride. If you don't own bikes, borrow them from friends.

  5. Find a park with swings. Relive your childhood.

  6. Have a “Chopped” Date at home. Pretend you’re one the show, “Chopped”: Dig through your cupboards and fridge, then challenge each other to create a delicious meal with the ingredients you find. If you’re feeling ambitious set a time limit for each course. If you’ve never seen “Chopped” and this sounds strange to you, well, you’re missing out.

  7. Play cards at home or at a coffee shop.

From a friend: "One of my favorite date ideas is super cheap/simple, My husband and I love going to new coffee shops and playing cards! This forces us to keep our phones away and enjoy an activity that allows us to talk (unlike when we go to the movies)."
  8. Play a board game.

From a friend: "Two of our favorites games are Pandemic and Flash Point. These are cooperative games, which is cool because you work together as a couple to beat the board instead of competing against each other."
  9. Stay up, or wake up, to watch the sunrise. Drive up into the hills (or to the top of a parking garage) to get a good view, and obviously, bring coffee.

  10. Get your friends together and throw a dance party!

  11. Go to the beach and build a bonfire.

  12. Read together. Choose a book on marriage or relationships that you can read and discuss with each other.

  13. Serve together. Volunteer together to feed the homeless at a local shelter, or ask your church what volunteer opportunities are coming up that you can get involved in.

  14. Savor a simple moment. Even brief moments in the middle of a crazy day can feel like a date if you're intentional about enjoying them.

From a friend: "For me, a fun date is anything that gets us laughing together! Honestly, one of the most fun things we love to do is go on “mini dates” while the baby is sleeping (without leaving the house, of course) . We’ll play ping pong or cards-  and I love it all- because for that moment, My husband and I are face to face without a care in the world (besides my futile attempts at whooping him at anything competitive!).
  15. Talk about your dreams. Then plan some practical steps to achieve them together.

  16. Pray together, focusing on everything you’re thankful for right now.

  17. Find a free neighborhood court and play tennis or paddle ball. Even if you’re awful, it’ll be hilarious and fun!
